Trans-Outeniqua MTB

This is a perfect event and routes for Cyclo Cross bikes and Mountain bikes. Cycle for 3 days across 3 mountain ranges in the Garden Route of South Africa, the most beautiful area of South Africa on gravel roads and jeep tracks. Start at the coast in the small little town Great Brakriver in the Garden Route, cross the Langeberge to a small town Van Wyksdorp, staying at the Rooiberg Lodge in the Rooberg Nature Reserve, cycle over the Rooiberge towards the Klein Karoo with the Swartberge in the background staying at De Zeekoe Guest Farm, and the last day cross the Outeniqua Mountains going down the old historic Montagu pass to the coastline again towards Great Brakriver, via the Forest jeep tracks along the Outeniqua Mountains. This is a Tour, not a race, so you can go at your own pace. Great training for the for Epic or any other Endurance race. Take the Edge of racing and come and enjoy the Tour with us. Make new friends along the way.

The Garden Route (Afrikaans: Tuinroete) is a stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa which extends from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the Eastern Cape. The name comes from the verdant and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. It includes towns such as Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley; with George, the Garden Route’s largest city and main administrative centre.

It has an oceanic climate, with mild to warm summers, and mild to cool winters. It has the mildest climate in South Africa and the second mildest climate in the world, after Hawaii, according to the Guinness Book of Records. Temperatures rarely fall below 10°C in winter and rarely climb beyond 28°C in summer. Rain occurs year-round, with a slight peak in the spring months, brought by the humid sea-winds from the Indian Ocean rising and releasing their precipitation along the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma Mountains just inland of the coast.

The Route is sandwiched between the aforementioned mountains and the Indian Ocean. The Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma indigenous forests are a unique mixture of Cape Fynbos and Temperate Forest and offer hiking trails and eco-tourism activities. Nearly 300 species of bird life are to be found in a variety of habitats ranging from fynbos to forest to wetlands.

Ten nature reserves embrace the varied ecosystems of the area as well as unique marine reserves, home to soft coral reefs, dolphins, seals and a host of other marine life. Various bays along the Garden Route are nurseries to the endangered Southern Right Whale which go there to calve in the winter and spring (July to December).

Wingman Multisport Athletics provides coaching services to athletes around the globe for an impressive array of events, from road running, open water swimming to road or mountain bike cycling. Based in South Africa, the team of coaches specialises in triathlon coaching, including the Ironman 70.3 and Ironman distances.

By capitalising on the intersection between individual ability, the science of athletic performance and the latest technology, Wingman Coaches work with each athlete to help them not only set, but also attain their personal sporting goals. Personal programmes are created for your unique level, fitness and available training time.

Slowest to fastest, biggest to smallest, beginner to pro –  there is a programme that is not only designed for you, but is responsive to your body as you train. Weekly feedback is provided using the leading online platform, Training Peaks, to design, deliver and adapt each athletes programme. The user-friendly nature of the application and its seamless integration with other training equipment and platforms ensures that going high tech with your training does not mean going high maintenance.

The value of this innovative, individually responsive approach is illustrated by the high levels of success attained by the Wingman athletes at events across the country – with multiple podium positions and countless personal bests smashed. Per illustration, a recent study on 70.3 Ironman (East London) athletes showed that Wingman male athletes performed significantly better than their non-Wingman counterparts in the event.

Car Trip

ct_trailrunning1

We have teamed up with CarTrip, a company that offers an internet-based platform that allows drivers and passengers to easily arrange lifts together.  We encourage you to visit their website www.cartrip.co.za and find out more about this exciting new service.  It provides a much-needed facility for our members to arrange lifts or offer lifts to various running events or even to and from our club.

Almost 70% of people that enter events drive to the venue on their own so it makes sense that our participants share their vehicles with other participants coming to the event.

The benefits of sharing rides to the event include:

  • You are able to meet fellow participants who share your passion for running.
  • If you are a driver you can recoup some or all of your petrol costs by offering a lift.
  • If you need a lift it will cost a fraction of the cost of travelling there with your own car.
  • Ladies can get lifts with lady drivers only if they prefer.
  • More parking and less congestion at the event as there will be fewer cars.
  • With fewer cars on the road, it helps our environment by reducing CO2 emissions.

So if you’re travelling alone to any of the running events or if you’re looking for a lift to an event then go to www.cartrip.co.za.  You will see a dropdown tab with all the events listed, just select your event and enter your ride details.  You can also email them with details of an event if it is not listed.  We do suggest that you read through their FAQ’s should you have any questions on how it works and we look forward to our members embracing this opportunity presented by CarTrip.
