The untamed Transkei is located in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa and lies just outside of East London. It is an almost forgotten part of the country that seems to function at its own pace and without modern day influences. Many tourists and locals visit the Transkei as it provides a unique experience that cannot be found anywhere else in the country.
One of the sites on our way back after the run is the Cape Vulture Colony just above Msikaba. Despite the extent of subsistence farmland in Africa, little is known about endangered species that persist within them. The Cape Vulture (Gyps coprotheres) is regionally endangered in southern Africa and at least 20% of the population breeds in the subsistence farmland area previously known as the Transkei in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa
Pondo Drifter Trail Run North is a 4 day/3 nights fully catered event in the Northern Transkei from Port St Johns to Mskaba from 26 April to 29 April where you will run 72km over 4 days in an unspoiled area of the Eastern Cape.
Due to the popularity of this event we have 2 Pondo runs, north and south both 4 days, but the entry only includes 3 nights accommodation for the North run. This North event runs from Port St Johns north to Mskaba where you will stay in a Tent on deck the 1st night, then at a River Lodge and then at the Drifter Lodge the last night. The North run do not have a rest day, but the last day will only be 9km and it will be the easiest of all the days. The River Lodge and Drifter Lodges are more up market than the Tents on deck, but all the accommodation are en suite.
The Pondo Drifter Trail Run will take you on an exploration of the Wild Coast in Transkei, South Africa. You will see the Cape Vulture Colony at Msikaba, 2 of the 7 waterfalls in the world that fall directly into the sea, Waves crashing against the rocks, the Cathedral Peak Rock standing out from the seaand shipwrecks at Grosnevor. Experience the birth place of Nelson Mandela, run (or walk fast) on cattle tracks above the cliffs with dramatic rocks and caves below and experience the culture of the Xhosa when walking through the friendly villages along the way. We have teamed up with CarTrip, a company that offers an internet-based platform that allows drivers and passengers to easily arrange lifts together. We encourage you to visit their website www.cartrip.co.za and find out more about this exciting new service. It provides a much-needed facility for our members to arrange lifts or offer lifts to various running events or even to and from our club.
Almost 70% of people that enter events drive to the venue on their own so it makes sense that our participants share their vehicles with other participants coming to the event.
The benefits of sharing rides to the event include:
- You are able to meet fellow participants who share your passion for running.
- If you are a driver you can recoup some or all of your petrol costs by offering a lift.
- If you need a lift it will cost a fraction of the cost of travelling there with your own car.
- Ladies can get lifts with lady drivers only if they prefer.
- More parking and less congestion at the event as there will be fewer cars.
- With fewer cars on the road, it helps our environment by reducing CO2 emissions.
So if you’re travelling alone to any of the running events or if you’re looking for a lift to an event then go to www.cartrip.co.za. You will see a dropdown tab with all the events listed, just select your event and enter your ride details. You can also email them with details of an event if it is not listed. We do suggest that you read through their FAQ’s should you have any questions on how it works and we look forward to our members embracing this opportunity presented by CarTrip.
This is a medium technical race. The route will not be marked. Just keep the sea on your right shoulder. We will have guides running with you to show you the best routes. The route is mostly on cattle tracks. There is enough water on the route, but we will have a waterpoint on route each day.
Accommodation is included in your rate at Mbotyi River Lodge, Drifters lodge and in Drifter’s Adventure tented chalets which are on poles with 2 beds and a shower and toilet, sleeps 2 people, 2 single beds, also at Mbotyi River Lodge in a En Suite room, and Drifter Lodge which is a en suite round chalets. If you want to stay single, a supplement of R3000 will apply unfortunately. Accommodation before and after the event we suggest Cremorne Estate, where you will be starting. www.cremorne.co.za
