A Land of Ancient History Namakwa is a vast, arid region spanning over 1,000 kilometers along the West Coast of South Africa and Namibia. It is divided by the Orange River into Little Namakwa (south) and Great Namakwa (north).
The region’s cultural evolution remained quiet until approximately 2,000 years ago with the arrival of the Nama (Khoikhoi) people from what is now northern Botswana. Today, the area is celebrated for its rich cultural history, preserved by the Nama and Khoisan tribes. As the largest group of the Khoikhoi people, the Nama continue to be the heart and soul of this remarkable landscape.
