Hike the Heart of Reunion Island: A Volcanic Paradise Awaits
Step into a world of towering peaks, emerald valleys, and ancient volcanic landscapes on an unforgettable hiking journey through Reunion Island — a remote tropical jewel in the Indian Ocean, tucked between Mauritius and Madagascar.
With a certified local guide leading the way, you’ll uncover the most breathtaking trails this French-speaking island has to offer. Born from volcanic fire millions of years ago, Reunion is home to Piton des Neiges, the island’s highest summit and a dormant giant that gave rise to this dramatic terrain. Today, its legacy lives on in the island’s three colossal calderas, or cirques — natural amphitheaters formed by collapsed volcanoes and shaped by time and erosion.
Among them lies Mafate, a remote and rugged sanctuary once used by escaped slaves seeking freedom. Still accessible only by foot, Mafate remains a powerful symbol of resilience — and one of the world’s most awe-inspiring places to hike.
Whether you’re crossing windswept ridges, descending into verdant valleys, or tracing ancient lava flows, every step in Reunion reveals something new — a waterfall tumbling into a jungle gorge, a quiet Creole village tucked into the hills, or a panoramic view that will stay with you forever.
This is more than a hike — it’s an immersive journey through one of the most geologically and culturally rich landscapes on Earth.
Reunion 8 Day/7 Night Volcano Hike

We will hike for 6 Days in the Mountains of Reunion.
The tour includes 7 nights of accommodation.
Hike for 6 days in the 3 x Cirques of Reunion as well as the 2 Volcanos, Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fornaise.
Stay at Gites (Hiking Huts) and small hotels in the Reunion mountains. This is a semi-slackpack hike. You carry only your clothes and lunch each day. Bedding and meals are provided by the gites in the mountains of Reunion. Hike from Gite to Gite; you can only reach these amazing places on foot or by helicopter. Food is dropped by helicopter, and there are no roads to drive on.
Cirque Mafate: Discover Mafate, hike with a professional English-speaking mountain leader, and enjoy an active adventure complete with breathtaking views.
Cirque Cilaos. Admire the magnificent view of the village of l’îlet à Cordes and the canyon dug by the Bras Rouge River. Cross the river several times, where you might need to get your feet wet. Follow the path as it heads towards the heart of an ancient volcanic chamber. Marvel at the many viewpoints over the Cirque de Cilaos. See the volcanic summit, which rises to 3070 meters above sea level.

Information
With different waves of immigration, Reunion Island has developed a rainbow-coloured population.
Reunion Island was virgin land when settlement began in the middle of the 17th century. The first settlers were French, who quickly surrounded themselves with slaves from Africa, the “Cafres” and Madagascar. Later, Indian, Tamil and residents of the New Zealand coast of Coromandel joined them.
All their descendants, regardless of their origin, are still called “Malabars”. Immigration of Muslim Indians – known as “Zarabs” – and Chinese craftsmen and traders dates back to the 19th century. From the 1960s, mainland French residents moved to Reunion Island in increasing numbers. In the 1970s, Mahorais and Comorians settled here.
This is a semi-slack-pack hike. You will not carry bedding or food, but only your clothes and lunch each day. The Gites will prepare the food for us, and there will be drinks for sale. We will spend 7 days on Reunion and hike for 5 days. We will stay 3 nights at Gites (Hiking huts with 4 to 6 beds per room) with shared bathrooms, and 3 nights we will spend at a 3-star hotel with your own en-suite room.
