Hike the Heart of Reunion Island: A Volcanic Paradise Awaits
Step into a world of towering peaks, emerald valleys, and ancient volcanic landscapes on an unforgettable hiking journey through Reunion Island — a remote tropical jewel in the Indian Ocean, tucked between Mauritius and Madagascar.
Trisport specializes in crafting and orchestrating an array of extraordinary multi-day Boutique Tours that will leave you spellbound. Sonja and Hano bring more than 24 years of sport tourism experience, blending expert know-how with a personal touch and heartfelt hospitalit
With a certified local guide leading the way, you’ll uncover the most breathtaking trails this French-speaking island has to offer. Born from volcanic fire millions of years ago, Reunion is home to Piton des Neiges, the island’s highest summit and a dormant giant that gave rise to this dramatic terrain. Today, its legacy lives on in the island’s three colossal calderas, or cirques — natural amphitheaters formed by collapsed volcanoes and shaped by time and erosion.
Among them lies Mafate, a remote and rugged sanctuary once used by escaped slaves seeking freedom. Still accessible only by foot, Mafate remains a powerful symbol of resilience — and one of the world’s most awe-inspiring places to hike.
Whether you’re crossing windswept ridges, descending into verdant valleys, or tracing ancient lava flows, every step in Reunion reveals something new — a waterfall tumbling into a jungle gorge, a quiet Creole village tucked into the hills, or a panoramic view that will stay with you forever.
This is more than a hike — it’s an immersive journey through one of the most geologically and culturally rich landscapes on Earth.
Reunion 8 Day/7 Night Volcano Hike

Réunion Island: The Peaks & Cirques Adventure
Prepare for a world-class trekking experience across the rugged, volcanic heart of Réunion Island. This 7-night, 8-day journey takes you through the island’s three legendary Cirques and its two iconic volcanoes: Piton des Neiges and Piton de la Fournaise.
The 7-day Semi-Slackpack Experience: Immerse yourself in the wilderness without the heavy lifting. On this semi-slackpack hike, you carry only your daily essentials (clothes and lunch for 2 day/2 night), while bedding and hearty mountain meals are provided at each stop.
-
Remote Gîtes: Stay in traditional mountain huts (Gîtes) and boutique hotels accessible only by foot or helicopter.
-
Off the Grid: Experience true isolation in areas where there are no roads—even the food is delivered to these remote outposts via helicopter.
The Three Cirques
-
Cirque de Mafate: Discover the most remote of the three cirques with a professional, English-speaking mountain leader. This is an active adventure defined by some of the most breathtaking views in the Indian Ocean.
-
Cirque de Cilaos: Admire magnificent vistas of the village of l’îlet à Cordes and the deep canyons carved by the Bras Rouge River. Be prepared to cross the river several times (you may get your feet wet!) as you trek toward the heart of an ancient volcanic chamber. Marvel at the volcanic summit of Piton des Neiges, rising 3,070 meters above sea level.
-
Cirque de Salazie: Known as the “Cirque of Waterfalls,” Salazie is home to some of the most beautiful villages in Réunion. Explore its lush, green landscapes and cascading waters alongside your expert guide.

Information
A Tapestry of Cultures: The People of Réunion
Through centuries of diverse immigration, Réunion Island has developed a vibrant, “rainbow” population.
When settlement began in the middle of the 17th century, the island was a pristine, uninhabited territory. The first French settlers were soon joined by enslaved people from Africa (known as Cafres) and Madagascar. Later, they were joined by Tamil and Indian laborers from the Coromandel Coast of South India.
Their descendants, regardless of specific origin, are often referred to locally as Malabars. The 19th century saw the arrival of Muslim Indians—known as Zarabs—as well as Chinese craftsmen and traders. Since the 1960s, arrivals from mainland France (Zoreilles) have increased, followed by Mahorais and Comorian settlers in the 1970s. This rich blend of heritages makes Réunion a truly unique cultural crossroads.

Fitness Level Requirement
Physical Requirements & Mandatory Fitness
This is an extraordinary journey through landscapes that are vastly different from the mountains of South Africa. However, to ensure this remains an “adventure of a lifetime” and not a “misadventure,” you must be physically prepared.
Strict Fitness Criteria:
-
No Beginners: This trek is exclusively for fit and experienced hikers.
-
High Endurance: You must be capable of handling steep gradients with daily elevations and descents of 900m to 1,600m (and over 1,700m if you summit Piton des Neiges).
-
Technical Terrain: While not a “technical climb,” you must be comfortable navigating rocks, boulders, and uneven volcanic terrain.
-
No Injuries or Phobias: Participants must be free of pre-existing injuries. Due to the dramatic mountain ridges, this hike is not suitable for those with a fear of heights.
Training Recommendations: You cannot prepare for Réunion on flat gravel roads alone. To enjoy this experience, your training must include elevation. We recommend completing several hikes with at least 700m of vertical gain in a single session before arriving on the island.
A Note on Group Dynamics: An unprepared hiker’s struggle significantly impacts the experience and morale of the entire group. We prioritize the safety and enjoyment of the collective team; therefore, baseline fitness is non-negotiable.
Contact Us Before Registering: If you are unsure of your fitness level or have questions about the terrain, please contact Sonja at sonja@trisport.co.za for a consultation before you book.
Age
Age & Health Requirements
To ensure the safety and well-being of all participants on our Réunion Island expedition, the following age and health guidelines apply:
-
Minimum Age: Participants must be at least 17 years of age.
-
Ages 65 and Over: Hikers aged 65 and older are required to provide a medical certificate or letter from their physician. This letter must explicitly state that the participant is physically fit to manage consecutive days of high-altitude hiking, involving daily elevations and descents of up to 1,600m.
Your safety is our priority. Please ensure this documentation is submitted to us at sonja@trisport.co.za prior to final registration.
Hiking Surface
Terrain & Elevation Profile
The trails in Réunion are world-renowned for their beauty and their difficulty. You should be prepared for a wide variety of challenging surfaces:
-
Technical Footing: Expect single-track paths, large boulders, and loose rock sections that require concentration and balance.
-
Varied Paths: The route includes established hiking trails as well as rugged, rocky mountain roads.
-
Steep Gradients: The island is famous for its “verticality”—prepare for long, sustained uphill climbs and equally demanding, steep descents.
-
Daily Elevation: Expect a vertical gain/loss of between 900m and 1,700m per day (particularly if you choose to summit Piton des Neiges).
