Whale Trail 5-Day/5 Night Boutique Hike

The Whale Trail is a captivating 5-day hike that begins at the Potberg Hut and unfolds through the stunning landscapes of the De Hoop Nature Reserve.
Stunning Scenery: The trail offers breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean, dramatic cliffs, and pristine beaches. The diverse landscapes, including fynbos, wetlands, and coastal dunes, provide a visually captivating experience for hikers.

Entry Fees Options
- Group Bookings: Each hut has three rooms available, allowing us to accommodate between three and 10 people, depending on your budget. The cost for the full tour will remain the same whether you have three or twelve participants. Contact Janine on janine@trisport.co.za for group bookings
Cost: R115 000 - Open Entries: Register as an individual and share accommodations with others. With this option, you sign up for a specific date and will share the hut with anyone else who registers for the same date

Highlights of the Tour
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Potberg Hut
- Afternoon: Arrive at Potberg Hut, check in, and settle into your accommodations. Enjoy a welcome briefing from your guide, who will provide an overview of the trail and safety information.
- Dinner at Potberg provided by your guide
Day 2: Potberg to Cupidoskraal hut (15,5km)
- Morning: After Breakfast, begin your hike. This is the toughest stretch of the trail and an early start is recommended. It will take you to the top of Potberg (15,5km) at 611 metres, with breathtaking panoramic views of Swellendam in the north, Cape Infanta in the east and Cape Agulhas in the west. You will also have a good chance of sighting the rare Cape vulture. The trail descends towards Cupidoskraal.
- Lunch: Enjoy a packed lunch along the trail, with scenic spots to take a break and appreciate the coastal views.
- Evening: Arrive at Cupidoskraal Hut, where a delicious dinner awaits. After dinner, relax and enjoy the sounds of the ocean.
Day 3: Cupidoskraal Hut to Noetsie (15,2km)
- Morning: Start your day with a nutritious breakfast at Cupidoskraal Hut. Afterward, prepare for the hike to Noetsie hut
- Lunch: Enjoy a packed lunch along the trail, with scenic spots to take a break and appreciate the coastal views.
- Afternoon: Continue your hike along the rugged coastline, with opportunities for whale watching. Arrive at Noetsie hut in the late afternoon.
- Evening: Dinner is served at Koppie Alleen, featuring a variety of dishes. Spend the evening relaxing and sharing stories with fellow hikers.
Day 4: Noetsie to Hamerkop hut (8,5km)
- Morning: After breakfast, set out for Hamerkop hut. This section of the trail takes you through diverse ecosystems.
- Lunch: A picnic lunch is provided along the way, allowing you to enjoy the natural surroundings.
- Afternoon: Arrive at Hamerkop hut, where you can explore the area and take in the rich biodiversity.
- Evening: Dinner is served at the De Hoop accommodations, followed by a chance to unwind and reflect on the day’s hike.
Day 5: Hamerkop hut to Vaalkrans hut (10,5km)
- Morning: Enjoy breakfast at Hamerkop hut before embarking on the hike to Vaalkrans Hut. This section features beautiful landscapes and opportunities for wildlife spotting.
- Lunch: A packed lunch is provided, allowing you to enjoy a meal in nature.
- Afternoon: Arrive at Vaalkrans Hut and take some time to relax and explore the surrounding wetlands.
- Evening: Dinner is served at VaalkransHut, featuring local cuisine. Spend the evening enjoying the peaceful environment.
Day 6: Vaalkrans hut Hut to Koppie Alleen (7km)
- Morning: After breakfast, prepare for the final stretch of the trail back to the endpoint (approximately 7 km). This last hike offers a chance to revisit some of your favorite views.
- Lunch: A celebratory lunch is provided at the endpoint, allowing you to reflect on your journey and share experiences with fellow hikers.
- Afternoon: Conclude your adventure, with options for transportation back to your starting point or onward travel arrangements.

- Catering: All meals are prepared with care, focusing on nutrition and local flavors. Dietary restrictions can typically be accommodated with prior notice.

How to get to the start of tour
To reach the start of the Whale Trail at Potberg, follow these directions:
By Car:
- Travel to Swellendam: If you’re coming from Cape Town, take the N2 highway east towards Swellendam. The drive is approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic.
- Head to De Hoop Nature Reserve: From Swellendam, take the R60 towards Bredasdorp. After about 20 kilometers, turn onto the R326 towards De Hoop Nature Reserve. Follow the signs for De Hoop, which is approximately 30 kilometers from the R60.
- Potberg Access Road: Once you reach the entrance of De Hoop Nature Reserve, follow the signs to the Potberg section. The access road to Potberg Hut is well-marked. It is advisable to have a 4×4 vehicle for this part of the journey, as the road can be rough in places.
- Arrive at Potberg Hut: The Potberg Hut is located within the reserve, and you will find parking available near the hut. Make sure to check in at the reserve office if required.
Venues
On the Whale Trail, hikers stay at five well-appointed venues, each offering a unique experience and comfortable accommodations. Here’s a description of each location:
- Potberg Hut:

- Noetsie hut:
- Overview: This venue is situated in a tranquil setting along the coast, offering a peaceful retreat for hikers.
- Features:Noetsie hut features comfortable sleeping quarters and communal facilities. The surrounding natural beauty and the chance to spot marine life make it a highlight of the trail.
- Hamerkop:
- Overview: Located within the De Hoop Nature Reserve, this venue immerses hikers in a rich biodiversity hotspot.
- Features: The accommodations here are more spacious and comfortable, with amenities that enhance the hiking experience. The area is known for its stunning landscapes and abundant wildlife, providing a perfect backdrop for relaxation after a day of hiking.
- Vaalkrans:
- Overview: The final stop on the trail, Vaalkrans is set in a picturesque location surrounded by wetlands and diverse flora.
- Features: This hut offers cozy sleeping arrangements and communal spaces for dining and socializing. The serene environment allows hikers to unwind and reflect on their journey as they enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

Entries Available
Limited to 10 entries.
If you prefer to have a smaller group, you can book the full tour as a group of only 6 people, but your group will pay for all 10 spots.
Fitness Level
Fitness level: Intermediate to FIT, not for Beginners.
Please Note:
The time the hike will take each day depends on how fit and fast the group is hiking. It is impossible for us as Organisers to determine before the time how fast each person hikes. We can only give the average hours it usually takes from fit to less fit groups.
But we suggest that before you do the hike you must be able to be hiking and on your feet for up to 8 hours.

Age
Age: Minimum age 14.
Although we welcome any age older than 14, people 65 and older must please send us a letter from their doctor stating that they are OK to hike the distances each day

Compulsory Gear
As a precaution, we would like you to carry the following compulsory equipment with you during the hike. It is for your own personal safety. Please adhere to the following:
- Cell phone;
- Zip Lock bag to keep phone dry;
- Space blanket;
- Backpack;
- Long Thermal base layer (pants and top);
- Whistle;
- Hat;
- Emergency food;
- Headlamp;
- Water bottles;
- Sunscreen (SPF50);
- Outer shell jacket (waterproof); and
- Small first aid kit.

The Whale Trail is a well-marked hiking route that spans approximately 55 kilometers over five days, offering a mix of coastal and inland scenery. Here’s a day-by-day breakdown of the route, distances, and technicality:
1. Potberg to Cupidoskraal
- Distance: 15,5 km
- Terrain: The trail begins with a moderate ascent through fynbos-covered hills, transitioning to a more level path as you approach Cupidoskraal. The terrain includes rocky sections and some uneven ground.
- What to See: Hikers can enjoy panoramic views of the Potberg Mountains and the surrounding landscapes. Look out for diverse plant species and birdlife, particularly in the fynbos vegetation.
- Difficulty: Moderate. The initial ascent may be challenging for some, but the overall hike is manageable for most hikers.
2. Cupidoskraal to Noetsie
- Distance: 15,2 km
- Terrain: This section features a mix of coastal paths and inland trails. The route includes some sandy stretches and rocky outcrops, with occasional elevation changes.
- What to See: As you approach the coast, you’ll have opportunities to spot Southern Right Whales during their migration season (June to November). The trail also offers beautiful views of the ocean and coastal cliffs.
- Difficulty: Moderate. The varied terrain requires attention, especially in rocky areas, but it is generally accessible for most hikers.
3. Noetsie to Hamerkop
- Distance: Approximately 8,5km
- Terrain: This segment includes coastal paths with sandy beaches and rocky sections. The trail may involve some ups and downs as it follows the coastline.

4. Hamerkop to Vaalkrans

- What to See: This section offers breathtaking views of the ocean and opportunities for whale watching. The area is rich in biodiversity, with various plant and animal species to observe.
- Difficulty: Easy to moderate. The terrain is generally accessible, making it a pleasant day of hiking.
5. Vaalkrans to Koppie Alleen
- Distance: 7 km
- Terrain: The final stretch includes coastal paths with sandy beaches and some rocky sections. The trail is relatively flat, making it easier to navigate.
- What to See: Hikers can enjoy the stunning coastal scenery and the chance to spot more whales. The area is also known for its rich birdlife and unique coastal vegetation.
- Difficulty: Easy. This section is more relaxed, providing a fitting conclusion to the hiking experience.

Safety Equipment
We have the following safety equipment with us:
– A medical kit, including bandages, etc.
– Epipen
– Radios
– A Garmin InReach (to be used in case of an extreme emergency only, not when you are tired)
– A helicopter for airlifting if we use the Garmin InReach, with the understanding that you will be held liable for the cost of evacuation.
