From Namaqua’s Flowers to the Atlantic: Discover the Moep to Sea MTB Tour

There are mountain-bike rides, and then there are journeys that take you somewhere you have never been before.

The Moep to Sea MTB Tour is a four-day, five-night adventure through some of South Africa’s most remote and remarkable landscapes, linking the highlands of Namaqualand with the rugged coastline of the Richtersveld.

Starting at Nigramoep Guest Farm on Kasteelberg, riders set off into a landscape that changes dramatically with every kilometre. Following the summer rains, the semi-desert can transform into a carpet of green and wildflowers, before giving way to the dry, rugged beauty of the Richtersveld and the Atlantic coast.

It is a route defined by contrast – high mountains, gravel roads, sandy river crossings, remote valleys, dramatic descents and the small coastal towns of Kleinzee and Port Nolloth.

And while the scenery is undoubtedly a major attraction, those who have completed the route say it is the people and shared experience that stay with you long after the bikes have been packed away.

Four days of riding, exploration and discovery

The adventure begins at Nigramoep Slow Living Guest Farm, where riders arrive, settle in and prepare for the days ahead.

Day two takes riders onto the Moep to Sea route, crossing the highlands before a spectacular descent into the Richtersveld. With around 1 300m of descending, technical sections, gravel and the ever-present challenge of the Northern Cape wind, it is a day that demands both concentration and stamina.

From there, the route continues towards the coast.

Day three takes riders through the diamond-mining towns of Kleinzee and Port Nolloth, offering a glimpse into a part of South Africa shaped by mining, isolation and its proximity to the Atlantic. After the long gravel roads, a coffee in Port Nolloth and a shower at McDougalls Bay provide welcome rewards.

The final day heads back towards the mountains and Nigramoep. The return includes a challenging climb of around 950m, as well as a memorable section through deep sandy river crossings in the Richtersveld.

It is a fitting way to complete a circular route that covers more than 2 000m of elevation change.

“The Northern Cape is anything but flat”

For Aleida Stoltz, who completed Moep to Sea in August 2026, the route was as much about the experience off the bike as it was about the kilometres.

Reflecting on the four-day adventure, she described the journey from Johannesburg to Namaqualand, beginning at Nigramoep, before tackling the climbs, technical descents, gravel roads and coastal stretches.

“Day 1 introduced us to endless climbs, rugged terrain and landscapes unlike anything we’d ever seen,” she recalls. “Nigramoep is an absolute gem, and the perfect place to begin an unforgettable adventure.”

Day two brought technical descents from Kasteelberg, headwinds and unforgiving gravel, while day three tested the group with long distances and tired legs before the reward of Port Nolloth.

Then came day four and the Richtersveld.

“Fourteen deep sandy river crossings” became one of the memorable challenges of the day before the mountains demanded the final reserves of energy needed to make it back to the finish.

But for Aleida, the experience was never simply about completing the route.

“Looking back, Moep2C was never just about the kilometres,” she says. “It was about discovering places we never knew existed.”

Where strangers become friends

One of the defining features of the Moep to Sea experience is the opportunity to share the journey with a group of people who arrive as fellow riders and leave as friends.

Aleida describes a group spanning different ages and backgrounds, united by a desire to step away from work, routines and everyday responsibilities for a few days.

There were shared meals, long conversations and plenty of laughter, with cycling providing the backdrop for discussions about life, family, business and everything in between.

“Somewhere along the way, strangers became friends,” she says.

And perhaps that is what makes a multi-day mountain-bike adventure different from simply following a route on a map. The difficult climbs and long kilometres become part of a shared story.

A different way to experience Namaqua and the Richtersveld

The Moep to Sea Tour also offers access to landscapes that few people experience from the seat of a bicycle.

Riders travel across private properties and remote trails, pass through the spectacular Schaapriver Canyon and experience the striking transition from Namaqua’s floral highlands to the semi-desert mountains of the Richtersveld.

There are also opportunities to experience the region beyond the bike, including a ride in a custom-built pipe car to viewpoints overlooking the Richtersveld and the Atlantic.

Accommodation and meals are carefully selected along the route, while local guides bring knowledge of the region’s history, wildlife, plants and communities to the journey.

Behind the tour are Hano and Sonja Otto, whose more than 23 years of experience and hands-on approach have helped shape the Moep to Sea into an adventure that places as much emphasis on hospitality and the overall experience as it does on the riding.

The result is a tour where riders can concentrate on the road ahead while knowing that the details are being taken care of.

For riders looking for something beyond the usual mountain-bike holiday, it offers four days of challenging riding, remote landscapes, coastal exploration and the chance to experience Namaqua and the Richtersveld in a very different way.

As Aleida puts it: the kilometres may eventually fade, but the friendships, laughter, stories and memories remain.
